Did you know that reducing your energy consumption will bring you many benefits such as reducing your bills, saving money and protecting the climate as less energy consumption means less carbon emissions?!
Over the past few years, a lot of information has circulated regarding actions about reducing households’ energy consumption, and yet, by analysing the collected data by bcheck, we have realised that there are still significant differences between households heating behaviours. For example, some houses use their boiler continuously during winter, while others only use it for a few hours. This is why we have decided to gather and summarise the main sources of energy savings for you.
According to a research carried out by Eurostat in 2017, the main energy use in European households is respectively space heating (64.1%) and water heating (14.8%). Not to mention that households represented 27% of final energy consumption in 2017 in the EU.
Here are 14 tips to reduce energy consumption at home*:
Change your behaviour:
1. Turn down your thermostat from 1°C and save up to 7% of energy by year.
2. Set your boiler at a maximum temperature of 60°C to make it run efficiently, no need to overheat your water!
3. Close your curtains during hot days.
4. Use fans rather than air conditioners in summer, they use less energy.
5. Switch off your electronic devices when you don’t need them.
6. Put on a jumper/pullover or use a blanket when it starts to be cold at home rather than increasing your heating temperature.
7. Reduce temperature at night, 16-17°C is recommended by the Commission for energy**, it will be more comfortable, and you will reduce your bill.
8. Only use hot water for long takes (e.g. shower, bath or dishwashing)
Invest in heating:
1. Insulate hot water tanks, central heating pipes and wall cavities.
2. Choose double-glazed windows to lose 50-70% less heat! If you cannot afford double-glazed windows, you can use: thick curtains, removable insulating window panels or you can seal gaps around windows.
3. Choose green power!
4. Use a Smart Thermostat, they are not so expensive and have proven to be efficient.
5. Maintain your heating installations!
6. Use bcheck and optimise your heating behaviour!
As you can see, there are lots of way to reduce your energy consumption and you can start by changing everyday behaviours at no cost! These little changes will definitely make you save money. Actually, there is no small action to save energy! Why not start saving today? 🙂
